Historic Pine Bluff An excellent way to spend a pleasant afternoon in down- town Pine Bluff is a walking tour of the historic district. A focal point of the tour is wife of President Richard Nixon’s Attorney General, John N. Mitchell, and best known for her series of late- night phone calls to reporters which revealed “dirty tricks” and prompted an FBI probe into the “Watergate Affair” that eventually resulted in Nixon’s resignation. THE BEN PEARSON BLOCK, which includes six beautifully restored 1800s homes. Three have been completely reno- vated. One structure of inter- est to history buffs is the small cottage where Colonel Clayton Powell of the Union Army was said to have head- quartered during the Civil War Battle of Pine Bluff. Just blocks away is MARTHA MITCHELL HOME, Built in 1887, the Ferguson- Abbott House is the child- hood home of the late Martha Beall Mitchell, Beautifully restored to 1920’s elegance and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the home is privately owned and not open to the public, but is a highlight of your stroll through the his- toric district. 21
